Screaming Jay Hawkins: I put a spell on you

perriermusicSome people wondering “why does he have a specific section for music on his blog ?”. My first answer is, basically, because I am fond of Music. But also because music is connected to my passion for advertising. Like lots of people I have discovered great songs through TV spots. I am not an exception, my first advertsing emotion was the spot directed by Jean Paul Goude for the beverage brand “Perrier”.

A 30 secondes ad got my mind twisted through its african ambiance, its cosmogonic tag line “De l’eau… De l’air… La vie” (water… air …for life), its subtile violence and intense ingeniousity. But the first thing that tattooed me was this six words shouted to introduce the ad climax: “I put a spell on you”

Perrier

That’s the way I put a name on the face of Grace Jones, actually the wife and muse of Jean Paul Goude.
And I finally discovered the schizophrenic but brilliantissime singer and performer Sir Screaming Jay Hawkins with the “f word” title “I put a spell on you”.

screamin jay hawkinsI knew that his song had been sung by greatest singer as Nina Simone but as an African-French I was surprised to learn that the well known french song “Ne me quittes pas” by Jacques Brel is largely inspired by Screaming Jay Hawkins’ song. And furthermore, Serge Gainsbourg, who is one my favourite french singer (also kind of “special” guy), was inspired by this fabulous artists from a part of its songs as “Comic strip” and they had the opportunity to work together as you can see below. Here are two genius chilling out !!! :-)

That’s it !!!
